Machine Learning Systems Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential autonomous technology organization in their search for a Machine Learning Systems Engineer. This is a high-impact role focused on building and optimizing the core infrastructure that powers large-scale model training. You'll work at the intersection of ML research and high-performance systems engineering, directly enabling faster experimentation and reduced time-to-convergence for next-generation models.

This position is available as fully remote within the United States or hybrid in Boston, Pittsburgh, or Las Vegas.

Responsibilities

• Profile and optimize distributed training pipelines, identifying bottlenecks in data loading, gradient computation, and inter-node communication using tools like Nsight and PyTorch Profiler
• Implement performance improvements including kernel fusion, model sharding, and memory tiling to reduce step time and improve throughput
• Design and maintain high-performance GPU kernels in Triton or CUDA for cutting-edge ML workloads
• Build and optimize robust data loading pipelines that maximize training efficiency and minimize idle GPU time
• Collaborate with ML researchers to scale distributed training using PyTorch Distributed and related frameworks
• Drive a data-driven approach to identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks in large-scale training infrastructure

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
• Strong software engineering skills with proficiency in Python
• Extensive hands-on experience with PyTorch and distributed training frameworks
• Proven experience optimizing ML model execution during both training and inference phases
• Solid understanding of machine learning fundamentals, including modern architectures and training processes
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities with a bias for action
• Experience with GPU performance profiling and optimization tools
• Ability to work collaboratively with research teams while maintaining focus on systems performance and reliability

Pay

The client has indicated a base salary range of $144,000 to $192,000 USD for this role, which may vary based on experience, location, and specific qualifications.
