Senior Backend Engineer (Product Platforms)

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential e-commerce organization based in Uddingston. We're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to take ownership of critical product platforms, improve system reliability, and deliver scalable solutions that directly impact business performance and customer experience.

This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll work closely with product, engineering, and operations teams. You'll be trusted to own key backend systems, troubleshoot complex production challenges, and contribute to architectural decisions that support continued growth.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs
• Own critical production systems and ensure reliability, performance, and maintainability
• Take ownership of existing platforms, gaining deep understanding of operations and identifying improvement opportunities
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical and operational issues
• Participate in incident response and post-incident learning activities
• Support architectural decisions that improve scalability and resilience
• Contribute to engineering standards, code review practices, and software delivery best practices
• Mentor less experienced engineers and support team development
• Improve observability, monitoring, and operational visibility
• Identify and address technical debt and system risks
• Support integrations with third-party services, logistics partners, and business systems

What We're Looking For

Required Skills and Experience:

• Significant commercial experience as a Backend Engineer with ownership of production systems
• Strong TypeScript or Python development experience
• Experience building and operating production systems at scale
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and API design
• Experience with relational databases and performance optimization
• Experience working within cloud environments, ideally Google Cloud Platform
• Strong debugging and problem-solving capabilities
• Experience supporting production services and operational environments
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Proven ability to deliver business-critical software

Preferred Experience:

• E-commerce experience
• Logistics or fulfillment systems experience
• Payment or commission platform experience
• Terraform and Infrastructure as Code
• Google Cloud Platform
• Next.js or tRPC familiarity
• FastAPI experience
