Machine Learning Engineer – RL

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology organization seeking a Machine Learning Engineer with deep expertise in reinforcement learning. This is a 100% remote position for candidates located in the United States, offering the chance to work on high-impact decision-making systems where traditional supervised learning approaches fall short.

Our client is looking for an engineer who can bridge research and production—someone who understands the theoretical foundations of RL while possessing the pragmatism to deploy stable, safe systems at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design, train, and deploy reinforcement learning-based systems for complex decision-making problems
• Develop and tune reward functions in non-trivial environments
• Build and maintain RL pipelines for large-scale policy training on GPU clusters
• Work with simulation environments and large-scale experience collection systems
• Evaluate and improve policy performance with a focus on stability and safety
• Collaborate across teams to transition RL solutions from research to production
• Document technical approaches and communicate findings to stakeholders

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

• Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field; or equivalent applied experience
• 6+ years of combined reinforcement learning research and engineering experience
• Strong proficiency in Python and modern deep learning frameworks
• Hands-on experience with at least one major RL library or custom RL stack
• Solid understanding of probability, optimization, and theoretical foundations of reinforcement learning
• Demonstrated experience designing and tuning reward functions
• Experience with simulation environments and large-scale data collection
• Proven track record training neural network policies on GPU clusters
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Track record of shipping or publishing impactful RL work

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) for large language models
• Familiarity with multi-agent RL or hierarchical RL
• Exposure to robotics, control systems, or autonomous driving applications
• Publications in RL or related research venues
• Open-source contributions to RL libraries or environments

Pay
