About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential client in the performing arts education sector, seeking an experienced Division Controller to lead accounting operations for a portfolio of schools across the United States. This is a fully remote, full-time position reporting to the Corporate Controller.
Our client operates multiple locations with active growth through acquisition. This role offers the opportunity to build scalable financial infrastructure, lead systems transformation, and mentor accounting leaders while maintaining hands-on involvement in school-level operations.
Responsibilities
As Division Controller, you will:
- Own accurate and timely monthly and year-end closes across a portfolio of schools, with full P&L and balance sheet accountability at each location
- Oversee tuition and enrollment-based revenue recognition, including deferred revenue for prepaid tuition, seasonal enrollment surges, and mid-session refunds or withdrawals
- Supervise and develop a remote accounting team, including management of outsource relationships across general ledger and close functions
- Review and approve school-level financial statements and reconciliations to consolidation
- Design, implement, and monitor internal controls across assigned schools, including cash handling, tuition billing, and refund controls
- Lead audit preparation activities, serving as the primary point of contact for external auditors
- Lead onboarding of newly acquired schools into NetSuite and student billing/enrollment systems, including purchase accounting support
- Drive system migrations and process re-engineering projects from scoping through go-live
- Build and maintain scalable reporting templates and chart-of-accounts standards for rollout across multiple schools
- Collaborate cross-functionally with FP&A, HR, and Operations to ensure accounting alignment and consistent reporting
- Represent the accounting function directly with school leadership, providing financial clarity on enrollment trends, tuition collections, and profitability
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a controller or senior leadership role
- Demonstrated experience managing accounting across multi-entity, multi-state environments
- Strong US GAAP knowledge, including technical research and application to non-standard transactions
- Solid understanding of revenue recognition, particularly as applied to tuition, program fees, and deferred revenue
- Advanced ERP experience (NetSuite strongly preferred)
- Track record of mentoring and developing accounting staff and junior leaders
- Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy in a fully remote environment
Strongly Preferred:
- CPA certification
- Experience with schools, education, membership, or subscription-based businesses
- System implementation or migration leadership experience
- Experience with student billing or enrollment management systems
- Prior M&A integration and purchase accounting experience
- Comfort with the seasonality of school businesses, including enrollment surges and session-based billing
Ideal Candidate Attributes:
- A builder who re-architects systems for scale across growing networks
- A technical resource who can research and apply US GAAP independently
- A leader of leaders who develops other accounting managers and controllers
- A project owner who can run implementations from start to finish
- A trusted operator who can represent accounting with confidence to senior leadership
