Engineering Manager

About This Opportunity

Our talent team at Get A Job.ai is representing a confidential payments technology company in their search for an Engineering Manager who can lead from inside the code. This is not a transition-to-meetings role—you'll ship production Java every sprint while setting technical direction, running Scrum ceremonies, and building a high-performing team on a platform where quality is non-negotiable.

This position is remote within the United States, with residency required in one of the following states: CA, IL, TX, MN, CO, GA, NY, MA, or CT.

Responsibilities

• Own the team's technical vision and roadmap, lead design reviews for major initiatives, and identify and mitigate key technical risks in a payments platform environment
• Run the team's Scrum ceremonies as the accountable leader—planning, grooming, pointing, and retros—protecting sprint scope so the team finishes what it commits to
• Partner with Product to scope, phase, and size initiatives before commitments are made, and negotiate scope when requests exceed capacity
• Set and enforce the definition of done for tests, review, and documentation; personally perform substantive code reviews that hold all engineers to a consistent bar
• Use code review and 1:1s as teaching surfaces, build development plans with every engineer, and grow people toward their next level
• Own the employee lifecycle for your team—hiring, onboarding, reviews, and coaching underperformers early—while building psychological safety without lowering standards
• Stay in the code: ship production Java each sprint, author design docs for major initiatives, and review front-end changes in HTML, JavaScript, and Angular
• Own your team's services in production, including monitoring, alerting, deployments, and incident response; bake security and compliance requirements into designs from the start

What We're Looking For

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with hands-on ownership of production systems
• 3+ years at Senior Engineer level or above; you spent at least half of your most recent management role hands-on in the code and can still operate at that level
• 3+ years of engineering management, directly managing a team of 4 or more engineers, including hiring and performance reviews
• 5+ years of Java experience including web frameworks, with production Java written within the last 12 months
• 2+ years running Scrum ceremonies as Scrum Master or the accountable equivalent, not just participating in them
• Preferred: production Linux experience (ideally Ubuntu), payments or B2B SaaS industry experience, experience in a PCI DSS or comparably regulated engineering environment, BS in Computer Science or sustained record of senior-level engineering work

Pay

The client has indicated a base salary range of $190,000–$220,000 per year for this role, plus a comprehensive benefits package including 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents, 401k with 6% match, home office stipend, learning stipend, and generous PTO. Actual compensation will depend on education, experience, skills, and qualifications.
