Senior Data Platform Engineer, Intelligent Platforms (all genders)

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential food-tech organization seeking a Senior Data Platform Engineer to join their Operational Data Platform team in Berlin. This is a hands-on engineering role at the core of their platform infrastructure.

In this position, you will:

• Build and run streaming and messaging platforms. Own the systems that move data in real time and at scale — Kafka, Kafka Connect, Flink, and SQS — ensuring they remain fast, resilient, and easy to build on.
• Drive platform efficiency. Identify and act on opportunities to reduce cost and complexity, making efficiency a default rather than an afterthought.
• Own reliability of critical data paths. Maintain high availability for core systems and continuously improve their resilience, observability, and operational maturity.
• Enable self-service for operational data stores. Build and maintain Terraform modules and tooling that allow engineering teams to provision databases within minutes, with governance and cost guardrails included.
• Develop AI-powered self-service tooling. Create capabilities — including AI and agent-based solutions — that enable teams to operate and maintain their own data infrastructure autonomously.
• Raise the bar on data quality for operational data, including implementing data quality checks on Kafka so downstream analytics can trust the data from the moment it's created.
• Collaborate across platform teams. Work closely with analytical data teams to ensure high-quality operational data flows seamlessly into the analytics platform through well-defined handover points.
• Operate what you build. Participate in on-call rotations for the systems you own and invest in automation to reduce manual intervention.

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Hands-on experience as a data, software, or platform engineer with a proven track record of building and operating production data infrastructure at scale
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and proficiency in backend languages such as Go, Java, Scala, or Python
• Deep experience with event streaming and messaging systems — particularly Kafka — including operational characteristics in production environments
• Solid understanding of databases (relational and NoSQL such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB) and the trade-offs between them
• Experience building infrastructure on AWS with infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, containers, and Kubernetes
• Strong ownership mindset with focus on reliability, efficiency, and developer experience
• Comfort with on-call responsibilities and a bias toward automating operational toil
• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering teams to design seamless, composable services

Nice to have:

• Experience with Flink, stream processing, or Kafka Connect
• Experience building self-service developer platforms
• Familiarity with data lake architectures
