Tech Lead Marketplace Experience (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential SaaS platform transforming B2B commerce infrastructure in a traditional European industry sector. Our client is building modern software that replaces fragmented manual processes with an integrated digital marketplace connecting producers, buyers, and distributors.

We're seeking a Tech Lead Marketplace Experience to take technical ownership of the marketplace platform and its services. You'll build and lead a new engineering squad from the ground up, reporting directly to the CTO. This is not a traditional people management role—you'll lead through technical depth, clarity, decisive action, and trust while remaining hands-on in the codebase.

You'll own one of the most commercially critical areas of the platform, setting technical direction, making architectural decisions under uncertainty, developing team members, and shaping squad culture. Working closely with the product team, you'll translate customer needs into sustainable technical solutions that deliver measurable value.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, technical quality, and evolution of the marketplace platform and its services
• Build your squad from scratch, develop team members, and establish a culture of ownership, pragmatism, and continuous learning
• Develop a clear technical strategy for the marketplace experience product area, making informed decisions about framework usage and extensions
• Work closely with product teams to translate user needs into scalable technical solutions
• Ensure your team delivers software continuously, securely, and reliably—from technical specification and architecture through API design, development, operations, incident management, and continuous improvement
• Take responsibility for performance, stability, security, and compliance; identify, assess, and address technical risks early
• Leverage AI thoughtfully in daily engineering work and help your team use AI responsibly for development, testing, documentation, and code reviews
• Own your product area completely: architecture, API design, development, operations, incidents, security, compliance, and commercial KPIs
• Engage directly with customers, visit their operations, and test solutions in real production environments

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Several years of experience as Tech Lead or Senior Engineer working on web and e-commerce applications
• Strong practical experience with PHP and Spryker Commerce OS, including understanding when to work within framework conventions, when to extend, and when to diverge
• Experience with API-first/spec-first development
• Hands-on experience with AWS cloud infrastructure, modern deployment processes, and monitoring
• Demonstrated experience building and developing teams
• Genuine interest in both product development (software) and team development (people)
• Self-directed work style, clear communication, high quality standards
• Fluent German and very strong English

Preferred:

• Strong TypeScript skills
• Experience with ERP, warehouse management, or commerce systems
• Experience with complex order, pricing, inventory, or catalogue processes
• Background in startup or fast-growing technology companies

This is a hybrid position based in Cologne, Germany, with regular visits to customer sites, partners, and growers.
