Customs AI Integration & Automation Engineer (France)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential customs and trade compliance organization operating across Europe. Our client is expanding their AI capabilities and needs an engineer who can bridge the gap between foundation models and reliable operational systems.

This is a builder role. You will design, test, and implement agentic AI solutions for document understanding, classification support, retrieval systems, and multi-step operational workflows. You are not training models from scratch—you are making existing models behave reliably enough that operations teams will trust them with compliance-sensitive work where errors have real consequences.

Working closely with operations, transformation, IT, and group teams, you will turn business needs into scalable, production-ready solutions.

Responsibilities

• Develop and customize AI solutions from prototype through production ownership
• Use generative AI to build agents that deliver measurable business impact
• Identify automation and decision-support opportunities across business processes and size them honestly before building
• Design solutions using large language models—retrieval, tool calling, structured extraction from documentation, and agentic workflows where appropriate
• Own evaluation: define success metrics before shipping and regression criteria after deployment—this is core to the role, not an afterthought
• Manage pilots with clear criteria for both scaling and termination
• Monitor performance, inference cost, latency, and business impact
• Collaborate with local teams, group functions, and technology partners
• Contribute to privacy, security, and AI governance compliance, understanding how EU AI Act requirements apply to your solutions

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• 1-2 years in AI engineering, software engineering, or intelligent automation, including LLM or AI features that real users depended on
• Strong Python and SQL with production code ownership—not just familiarity
• Demonstrable experience integrating large language models into production systems: prompt and context design, retrieval-augmented generation, structured output, and graceful failure handling
• Practical experience with at least one major cloud AI platform (Azure AI, AWS Bedrock, or Google Vertex)
• Solid backend engineering fundamentals—APIs, data pipelines, testing, CI/CD
• Strong communication skills—you will spend real time with operations staff who are domain experts
• Professional fluency in English

Desirable (heavily weighted):

• Evaluation engineering: building eval harnesses and regression suites for non-deterministic systems, LLM-as-judge approaches, and human-in-the-loop review design
• Context engineering: designing and version-controlling what a model sees—retrieval strategy, memory, tool descriptions, and policy layers
• Agent orchestration frameworks (LangGraph, MCP, Temporal or equivalent) and experience with long-running or multi-step workflows
• Observability and cost control for inference at volume

Success milestones:

• By month three: understand business processes well enough to challenge requirements, and ship one small, useful solution
• By month six: at least one AI solution live, measured against baseline, demonstrably better than what it replaced
• By month twelve: working evaluation process others can use, ranked pipeline of opportunities, and at least two colleagues outside IT operating your solutions independently
