Product Manager, Data Orchestration

About This Role

We are representing a confidential open-source orchestration platform serving data engineering and automation teams worldwide. Our client is seeking a Product Manager, Data Orchestration to lead product development for data pipeline orchestration capabilities. This is a hands-on role for someone who has built data pipelines themselves and understands the modern data stack from practical experience.

You will own the full product lifecycle—from understanding data engineer pain points through delivery—working with minimal process overhead. This is not a project coordination role; our client values shipping real value quickly over ceremonial frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Own the complete product lifecycle for data orchestration features, from customer problem discovery through technical specification, prototyping, and delivery with engineering teams
• Shape data-aware orchestration capabilities—pipelines modeled around datasets they produce, incorporating lineage, freshness, and data quality as orchestration concerns
• Deepen integrations with the modern data stack including dbt, extraction/loading tools, cloud warehouses, streaming platforms, and the broader plugin ecosystem
• Design migration paths and documentation for teams transitioning from existing orchestration platforms
• Collaborate with product leadership and technical leadership to scope features for 8-week release cycles
• Make informed tradeoffs balancing simplicity, technical feasibility, and long-term product sustainability
• Coordinate development progress ensuring features are delivered, tested, documented, and production-ready
• Continuously improve the product based on customer feedback, usage analytics, and community input

What We're Looking For

• Hands-on data domain expertise—you have built or managed data pipelines yourself and know transformation tools, extraction/loading platforms, and cloud warehouses from practical use
• Workflow orchestration experience—practical knowledge of orchestration platforms with clear understanding of scheduling, backfills, retries, and dataset dependencies
• Startup mentality—comfortable working without heavy process or rigid structure; you iterate quickly and take initiative
• Excellent written communication—clear, precise specs, product decisions, and public-facing documentation
• Full ownership approach—you iterate based on feedback and drive work forward without waiting for direction
• Open-source familiarity—experience or comfort with public development discussions and writing for technical communities
• Distributed team experience—comfortable coordinating across time zones with global teams

Bonus qualifications:

• Past experience as a data engineer or analytics engineer
• Experience migrating teams between orchestration platforms
• Background in B2B software or open-source companies
• Exposure to SaaS products, particularly self-serve or platform models
• Familiarity with data engineering communities and tool adoption patterns
