About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential European defence technology client in their search for a Battery System Engineer/Architect to join their team in Munich. Our client develops advanced unmanned systems and requires an experienced engineer to lead the design and integration of high-performance battery solutions for aerospace applications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architectural design of custom battery packs optimized for high-discharge aviation applications with strict weight and power requirements
  • Define requirements for Battery Management Systems (BMS) working alongside firmware and electronics teams, covering state-of-charge (SOC), state-of-health (SOH) algorithms, cell balancing, and fault protection logic
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers on lightweight enclosure design and thermal mitigation strategies to manage peak operational loads
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans at cell, module, and pack levels including thermal runaway, drop, vibration, and environmental testing
  • Ensure compliance with international safety and transport standards (e.g., UN 38.3)
  • Support manufacturing transition from prototype to mass production, ensuring quality control and high yield rates

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of professional experience in battery system design, preferably in aerospace, automotive (EV), or consumer electronics
  • Deep understanding of lithium-based battery chemistries, failure modes, and degradation mechanisms
  • Experience with BMS architecture, cell monitoring, and protection circuitry
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., CATIA) and PCB design/review tools (e.g., Altium)
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, I2C, and UART
  • Hands-on hardware experience including prototyping, soldering, and using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, electronic loads, battery cyclers)
  • Direct experience designing battery systems for drones, eVTOLs, or electric aircraft is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with Python or MATLAB for test automation and data analysis is beneficial
