Internship – Machine Learning Research Engineer

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential technology organization seeking a Machine Learning Research Engineering Intern for a 12–24 week full-time, in-person program in Berlin. In this role, you will:

• Drive search quality improvements through models, data, tooling, and other available leverage points
• Train and optimize large-scale deep learning models using PyTorch, applying distributed training techniques such as PyTorch Distributed, DeepSpeed, and FSDP with hardware acceleration
• Focus specifically on retrieval and ranking model development and performance tuning
• Conduct research in representation learning, including contrastive learning, multilingual modeling, evaluation frameworks, and multimodal approaches for search and retrieval
• Build and optimize RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) pipelines for grounding and answer generation

What We're Looking For

• Strong understanding of search and retrieval systems, including quality evaluation principles and metrics
• Demonstrated proficiency with PyTorch, including hands-on experience with distributed training techniques and performance optimization for large models
• Interest and experience in representation learning domains: contrastive learning, dense and sparse vector representations, representation fusion, cross-lingual representation alignment, training data optimization, and robust evaluation methodologies
• Publication record in AI/ML conferences or workshops such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, or SIGIR
• Ability to work full-time in-person at the Berlin office for the duration of the internship (12–24 weeks)
