Software Engineer, Backend – Core/API & Process Automation

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential workflow automation technology company in their search for a Software Engineer, Backend - Core/API & Process Automation. This is a fully remote position where you'll work on the foundational engine powering business-critical processes for enterprise customers worldwide.

This backend role offers rare impact: you'll work on an event-sourced, distributed workflow engine where your improvements propagate through every integration and product layer. You'll tackle genuine distributed-systems challenges—event sourcing, ordering, concurrency, replay—in a codebase where data integrity and process reliability are non-negotiable. When things break, customers lose money, so the engineering bar is exceptionally high.

You'll also contribute to cutting-edge work enabling AI agents to drive workflow automation, alongside a global team of highly skilled engineers committed to building the best workflow engine in the industry. This is open-source work with visible impact, clear ownership, and fast growth potential.

Responsibilities

• Build and evolve features in the event-sourced engine and its REST/gRPC/MCP API (command/event, CQRS architecture)
• Own well-scoped work end-to-end—implement, test, ship, and contribute ideas to solution designs and ADRs
• Ship high-impact engine features such as suspending/resuming process instances, enabling AI agent orchestration, and variable tracing
• Design and consume clean APIs with good contracts, developer ergonomics, and backward compatibility awareness
• Detect and optimize inefficient processing and data-access patterns across RocksDB, Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and relational databases (Postgres)
• Build observability into what you ship; proactively flag issues and technical debt
• Maintain quality through reviews and testing; participate in support and on-call rotation as you ramp

What We're Looking For

Must-Have Skills:

• 2+ years professional backend engineering experience
• Solid grasp of event-driven systems with genuine eagerness to go deep on event sourcing and distributed systems—including working understanding of consistency, ordering, and failure scenarios
• Good API design instincts (REST)—clean, sensible contracts with awareness of backward compatibility
• Product thinking—you care about outcomes for users, not just closing tickets
• Strong "manager of one" qualities: own your work and drive it forward without day-to-day management; manage time and focus in remote/async settings; communicate progress and raise blockers early
• High growth drive—actively takes on unfamiliar, uncomfortable challenges rather than staying in the comfort zone
• Clear written communication for remote-first, async collaboration

Nice-to-Have Skills:

• Experience with workflow automation or process orchestration (BPMN or similar)
• Comfort reasoning about query patterns in Elasticsearch/OpenSearch and relational databases
• Familiarity with observability tooling (logging, metrics, tracing)
• Working JVM knowledge
