System Engineer (m/w/d) Open Source Collaboration & Kubernetes

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential research computing organization in their search for a System Engineer specializing in Open Source Collaboration and Kubernetes. In this role, you will contribute to a strategically significant project evaluating sovereign, open-source alternatives to commercial cloud and collaboration services.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Technical evaluation of collaboration and groupware systems using open-source technologies
• Building and operating test and pilot environments for containerized applications
• Implementing and managing Kubernetes-based infrastructure
• Collaborating closely with experts in groupware, collaboration platforms, and identity management
• Working with infrastructure automation and DevOps tooling including CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and GitOps approaches
• Contributing to the development of sovereign IT architectures that strengthen digital independence

What We're Looking For

Our client seeks candidates with:

• Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or comparable field
• Proven experience administering, integrating, or developing server services
• Strong hands-on experience building and operating containerized applications on Kubernetes
• Proficiency with infrastructure automation and DevOps tools such as GitLab CI/CD, Ansible, Terraform, or ArgoCD
• Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: groupware/mail systems, Linux system operations, containerization and cloud-native technologies, identity management (SAML, LDAP, OIDC)
• Experience with or genuine interest in open-source infrastructures and sovereign IT architectures
• Quick comprehension skills and strong teamwork abilities
• Independent working style with high customer orientation
• German language proficiency required for this position in the Munich area

Position Details

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) located in Garching bei München with flexible working arrangements including up to 60% remote work for suitable tasks. The role is currently planned through April 2028 with strong potential for continuation. The position offers flexible scheduling with electronic time tracking, 30 days annual leave, and modern office facilities with excellent public transport connections.
