Principal Analytics Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology client seeking a Principal Analytics Engineer to lead the evolution of their product analytics infrastructure. This is a remote position based in the USA.

Our client is building next-generation analytics architecture that serves both human analysts and AI-powered tools. You'll architect the semantic layer, data transformation pipelines, and quality standards that enable faster, more reliable insights across product and engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Design and build high-scale dbt models that transform raw data into clean, well-documented analytics products with clear ownership and contracts
• Implement guardrails, grain definitions, and metadata standards that enable AI tools to query data accurately while maintaining governance
• Shape metric definitions and semantic layer architecture so analysts, dashboards, and AI tools deliver consistent answers
• Translate recurring analyst pain points into durable, reusable models and shared interfaces that eliminate friction
• Establish quality standards for data products, embedding testing, freshness expectations, and catalog documentation into the development lifecycle
• Coordinate across data platform and product teams to map use cases, eliminate duplicate work, and reduce cycle times from question to insight
• Collaborate with peers to establish global patterns, package management, and repository best practices
• Mentor engineers and analysts through technical reviews, office hours, and pair-programming sessions

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related quantitative field
• 12+ years of experience in analytics engineering, data engineering with analytics partnership, or equivalent technical data role
• Expert-level SQL and strong Python proficiency for advanced data work
• Proven track record delivering on modern data stacks (transformation-as-code, orchestration, warehouses, BI)
• Experience with data governance tooling including catalogs, lineage systems, and policy-aware access patterns
• Exceptional cross-functional leadership skills with history of influencing teams without direct authority
• Strong technical communication skills with ability to explain complex modeling decisions to diverse technical audiences

Preferred qualifications:

• Hands-on experience with dbt and Snowflake in high-scale environments
• Practical experience implementing data mesh architectures or federated ownership models
• Exposure to AI/LLM tooling as a data consumer with understanding of data requirements for AI agent queries
