About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential eCommerce technology organization in their search for a Team Lead - Site Reliability Engineering to join their Berlin location. Our client is actively modernizing their hosting infrastructure toward Kubernetes on an on-premise hybrid model with future cloud scalability options. In this role, you will own the reliability, scalability, and cost of production hosting environments while leading a 4-person technical team through a critical platform transformation.

Responsibilities

  • Own operational health of hosting across on-premise data centers and cloud environments – including availability, performance, and incident management
  • Drive the modernization toward Kubernetes on Harvester: cluster topology, storage solutions, networking (VLAN, load balancing, ingress), backup, and disaster recovery
  • Build and maintain a production-grade Kubernetes platform: lifecycle management, upgrades, RBAC, secrets management, GitOps (Argo CD / Flux), observability, and policy guardrails
  • Shape custom Kubernetes operators and implement auto-scaling solutions (HPA, VPA, KEDA, cluster autoscaler) for current architecture
  • Define and execute the on-premise hybrid model: workload placement strategy, cloud burst capabilities, latency and cost optimization, while maintaining portability for future cloud migration
  • Own capacity planning and hosting cost management as a strategic lever
  • Lead and develop the current 4-person hosting team, including performance management, technical direction, and fostering an ownership culture
  • Integrate AI tools into operations for diagnosis, automation, monitoring, and insights

What We're Looking For

  • Strong background in infrastructure or platform engineering across on-premise and cloud environments
  • Hands-on production experience with Kubernetes: cluster lifecycle, upgrades, networking, storage, RBAC, observability, and GitOps delivery
  • Proven people leadership experience with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Practical experience with Harvester or comparable HCI/virtualization platforms (KubeVirt, vSphere/ESXi, OpenStack) strongly preferred
  • Track record leading a migration from bare metal or classic VMs to a Kubernetes-based platform – including stateful workloads, storage migration, cutover, and rollback planning
  • Experience designing or operating Kubernetes operators (custom controllers / CRDs), ideally for stateful systems such as search, databases, or streaming platforms
  • Solid understanding of auto-scaling primitives (HPA, VPA, cluster autoscaler, KEDA) and their integration with capacity planning in hybrid environments
  • Demonstrated experience with on-premise hybrid architectures and ownership of reliability, capacity, and cost for production systems
  • Hands-on fluency with AI tools in day-to-day operations
  • Fluent English required; German is a plus
