Senior Roadway Design Lead

Trilon Group is seeking an experienced Senior Roadway Design Lead to join our transportation engineering practice in Detroit, Wayne County. This full-time position offers the opportunity to lead significant roadway and highway design initiatives while building and mentoring a talented team of civil engineers.

Role Overview

As Senior Roadway Design Lead, you will direct the planning, design, and delivery of complex roadway projects from preliminary studies through construction support. You'll serve as the principal technical authority on roadway design matters, overseeing multidisciplinary teams and ensuring all work meets industry standards and client expectations. This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with leadership responsibilities, allowing you to shape both project success and team development.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Lead roadway design projects through all phases, applying current design standards and engineering best practices
• Supervise and mentor civil engineers and designers on technical requirements, quality standards, and project delivery
• Prepare, review, and approve design plans, specifications, and construction documents for accuracy and regulatory compliance
• Coordinate with municipal clients, state and federal agencies, and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation for assigned roadway initiatives
• Contribute to proposal development and provide technical leadership on transportation engineering matters

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan or reciprocal state
• Substantial experience in roadway and highway design, typically 7 or more years
• Proficiency with design software and CAD platforms
• Strong knowledge of AASHTO standards, MUTCD guidelines, and local design specifications
• Demonstrated leadership and project management experience
• Excellent technical communication and presentation skills
