About this role & career path
Acute L&D RN work builds high-acuity perinatal skills—triage, continuous fetal monitoring, emergency obstetric response—that transfer to other inpatient women’s health or high-risk OB settings within hospital systems.
Build the skills for this role
Prioritize current RN licensure, L&D competencies (fetal monitoring, obstetric emergencies), and BLS/NRP as employers require. Free learning options:

Be ready for clinical scenarios: non-reassuring fetal heart patterns, postpartum hemorrhage, and prioritization on a busy L&D unit. Ask how the hospital staffs L&D, handles high-risk transfers, and orients new acute RNs.
Strong fit if you want hands-on inpatient obstetrics at a long-established Connecticut community hospital rather than remote or outpatient-only nursing.
