About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential European defence technology client seeking a working student to join their hardware engineering team in Berlin. This is a hands-on role focused on the propulsion and power systems that enable unmanned aerial platforms to achieve their performance targets.

You will work directly with motors, batteries, propellers, and power components—conducting bench characterisation, capturing test data, and analyzing performance using MATLAB and Python. This position offers practical exposure to how unmanned hardware is designed, tested, and validated for deployment in demanding operational environments.

Responsibilities

  • Support characterisation and bench testing of motors, propellers, batteries, and power components for unmanned aerial platforms
  • Set up test rigs and instrumentation to capture clean, repeatable measurement data
  • Assist with component selection and trade-offs by converting test data into clear comparisons
  • Reduce and analyse test data in MATLAB and Python, focusing on efficiency, thrust, endurance, thermal behavior, and discharge characteristics
  • Visualize results to enable rapid engineering decision-making
  • Maintain documentation of test setups, measurements, and findings to ensure traceability

What We're Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, or comparable engineering field
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB and Python for data analysis
  • Interest in and some exposure to unmanned aerial systems, electric propulsion (motors/ESCs), or battery/power systems
  • Must be a citizen of a NATO member state (due to export control and security regulations)
  • Practical, hands-on mindset—comfortable working at the bench with instrumentation and in scripting environments
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English; German is a plus
  • Hands-on approach: you enjoy building, measuring, and discovering real-world behavior
  • Rigorous methodology: you trust clean measurements over assumptions
  • Curious mindset: you want to understand why components behave the way they do

Nice to have:

  • Experience with test benches, data acquisition systems, or measurement instrumentation
  • Familiarity with battery testing, thermal behavior, or motor/propeller characterisation
  • Personal projects involving drones, RC aircraft, batteries, or robotics
