What This Role Involves

As the Substance Abuse Counselor (Nemo, SD) – Youth Residential Program professional at PsyPhyCare, you will deliver direct counseling and support to youth living in a residential program. The focus is on assessing needs, guiding treatment progress, and creating a consistent, therapeutic environment that reinforces healthy choices and personal growth for adolescents facing substance-related issues near Nemo, SD.

Core Duties

• Perform comprehensive substance use assessments for youth residents and contribute findings to care planning
• Create, update, and implement individualized treatment goals tailored to each young person’s situation
• Lead individual and group counseling sessions that address addiction, coping skills, and relapse prevention
• Educate residents and their families about substance use patterns, recovery resources, and healthy lifestyle choices
• Document all sessions, progress notes, and incidental observations accurately and promptly
• Partner daily with residential staff, case managers, and clinical colleagues to coordinate care and maintain a supportive milieu
• Respond to crises or high-risk situations with de-escalation techniques and appropriate referral pathways
• Facilitate psychoeducational activities and skill-building exercises that strengthen long-term recovery foundations

What You Bring

• Demonstrated experience or training in substance abuse counseling, ideally with adolescents or young adults
• Solid understanding of common treatment approaches used in residential youth programs
• Strong interpersonal, listening, and motivational interviewing skills
• Ability to form trusting therapeutic relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries
• Comfort working collaboratively inside a structured residential schedule and multidisciplinary team
• Relevant educational background or recognized credentials in counseling, social services, psychology, or a closely related discipline
• Reliability, cultural sensitivity, and a genuine commitment to helping youth overcome substance challenges in Nemo, SD
