GitLab seeks a Site Reliability Engineer at the Intermediate to Senior Staff level to join our Infrastructure Platforms team on a full-time, fully remote basis. You'll help ensure the platform that powers millions of developers remains performant, reliable, and secure at global scale.
Position Summary
In this role, you'll be part of a globally distributed infrastructure team dedicated to keeping GitLab's user-facing systems and production infrastructure running dependably. Site Reliability Engineers here blend operational responsibility with strong software engineering practices, applying automation, monitoring, and continuous improvement to build and operate resilient infrastructure. We're hiring across multiple levels and teams within Infrastructure Platforms—your background will be evaluated holistically, and you'll be matched to the opportunity and level that best align with your experience and our current needs.
You don't need experience with every tool in our environment. We value solid technical fundamentals, a commitment to continuous learning, and the ability to grow quickly with our systems and processes.
Responsibilities
- Maintain high availability and performance of user-facing services and production infrastructure
- Design, build, and evolve automation frameworks and infrastructure-as-code solutions that replace manual effort with repeatable, scalable workflows
- Manage and troubleshoot containerized systems running on Kubernetes, including orchestration, deployment strategies, and resource scaling
- Write, test, and safely deploy infrastructure changes through continuous integration, continuous delivery, and GitOps practices
- Participate in on-call rotations, respond to production alerts, maintain and improve operational runbooks, and escalate issues appropriately
- Contribute to monitoring and observability systems, leveraging metrics, logs, and service-level objectives to detect problems before they become customer-facing outages
- Lead or participate in incident response activities, conduct post-incident reviews, and translate findings into process and automation improvements
- Author clear documentation of system architecture, operational procedures, and technical decisions to embed knowledge across the team
What You Bring
- Proven experience operating production systems with a balance between operational discipline and software engineering rigor
- Hands-on background developing infrastructure tooling and automation from the ground up—such as Terraform modules, Kubernetes operators, or custom production services—rather than only configuring off-the-shelf solutions
- Comfort reading, analyzing, and reasoning about production code to understand behavior, performance characteristics, and failure scenarios (our teams primarily work in Go and Ruby)
- Practical expertise with infrastructure-as-code methodologies, Kubernetes, and its ecosystem at a level consistent with your experience
- Direct experience with one or more major cloud providers such as Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services
- Familiarity with observability disciplines including metrics collection, structured logging, alerting strategies, and service-level indicators or objectives, plus the ability to use data to guide operational decisions
- Readiness to participate in on-call schedules and incident response, with a systematic, methodical approach to troubleshooting under time pressure
- Strong written communication skills and the capability to work independently and asynchronously in a distributed, remote environment
- A demonstrated track record of using automation and AI-assisted tools to reduce repetitive work and enhance team productivity
