Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Data Layer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential enterprise software organization seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Data Layer to join their global, fully remote engineering team. This role offers the chance to work on complex data infrastructure challenges at scale, supporting process orchestration systems used by hundreds of major enterprises worldwide.

As a senior backend engineer on the Data Layer team, you'll design and evolve the storage and query infrastructure that powers mission-critical process data. You'll work across both relational databases and search technologies, building systems that handle high throughput while maintaining accuracy and availability. This is a highly collaborative role where you'll partner with product, design, QA, and support teams to influence the technical direction of a critical platform component.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services for the data layer, working with relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch to ensure correctness, performance, and scalability
• Own end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives, collaborating with Product Management to break down requirements into solution designs and drive timely, high-quality delivery
• Evolve data processing, retention, and exposure capabilities to meet diverse customer needs
• Improve performance and scalability of secondary storage systems as usage grows
• Build tooling to enhance observability, troubleshooting, and safe operation of the data layer in production
• Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, investigating production issues and feeding insights back into product improvements

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• At least 7 years of experience as a backend engineer with strong focus on backend systems and production data stores
• Deep experience with both relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, or MSSQL preferred) and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch
• Practical understanding of query performance, indexing, and data modeling trade-offs
• Proven track record leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end-to-end, including solution design, project planning, cross-team coordination, and predictable delivery
• Ability to investigate slow queries, execution plans, and index usage to diagnose data-related production issues
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment
• Ability to translate requirements into actionable technical work and provide clear, direct feedback in code reviews

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience building workflow automation or process orchestration software
• Experience building or maintaining CI pipelines
• Understanding of database migration tooling (Liquibase, Flyway) and schema evolution in live systems
