About This Opportunity
We are representing a confidential fusion energy organization based in Munich that is building next-generation stellarator technology. Our client is developing computational infrastructure to support the design and optimization of highly complex plasma systems, magnets, cryogenics, and integrated fusion hardware.
As a Senior Simulation Engineer focused on computational physics, you will own critical simulation models that span multiple domains—from microwave physics to plasma radiation. These models directly inform load cases, system-level tradeoffs, numerical optimization, and whole-machine simulation for a first-of-a-kind energy system.
Responsibilities
- Identify, implement, and maintain physics simulators—either building from scratch or wrapping existing tools into the design platform
- Co-define input and output data models with engineering teams to ensure simulation interfaces capture the correct design specifications
- Ensure correctness through rigorous testing, verification, and validation as designs evolve; contribute to hardware validation where needed
- Support integrated design teams with dedicated studies that inform critical engineering tradeoffs
- Expose simulators as services via dashboards, online tools, and interactive reports that can be used by cross-functional teams and AI agents
- Work across tightly coupled disciplines including plasma physics, magnets, structures, cryogenics, and heating systems
What We're Looking For
- PhD or Master's degree in physics, engineering, or a related technical field
- Demonstrated experience building simulation tools that combine numerical algorithms, geometry, and physics
- Strong software engineering practices: proficiency with git, CI/CD, the PyData stack, and autodifferentiation packages (JAX, PyTorch, or similar)
- Comfort working with complex 3D geometries and multi-physics phenomena
- Ability to select appropriate simulation tools—from simple custom models to commercial multiphysics packages—based on technical requirements
- Proactive mindset: you identify gaps before they become problems and prioritize effectively
- Experience building production-quality tools, not just research scripts
