We are representing a confidential SaaS organization that is building AI-powered workplace solutions for frontline teams. Our talent team is seeking a (Senior) Product Engineer (Backend) to join a product-focused engineering environment where backend ownership meets end-to-end thinking.

This role goes beyond traditional backend development. You'll design and maintain scalable services while staying connected to the complete user journey—collaborating across product, design, frontend, mobile, and AI teams to deliver features that matter. The position values engineers who can prototype ideas, measure impact, and expand their scope when needed to ship complete experiences.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain reliable and scalable backend services for SaaS products
• Build APIs, data models, and integrations using Kotlin or Java with modern web frameworks
• Take ownership of features from problem discovery and prototyping through rollout and impact measurement
• Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and engineers across multiple technical disciplines
• Extend beyond backend when needed—contribute to web, mobile, infrastructure, or other areas to deliver complete product experiences
• Use AI coding assistants and modern development tools to explore unfamiliar codebases and accelerate structured development
• Focus on user outcomes rather than simply completing predefined tickets, using prototypes, instrumentation, and experimentation to validate ideas
• Contribute to technical decisions, engineering practices, code quality, and scalable product architecture
• Participate in an evolving engineering culture focused on end-to-end ownership and rapid experimentation

What We're Looking For

• Professional experience in backend software engineering—we welcome candidates from a few years of experience through senior-level engineers
• Strong hands-on experience with Kotlin or Java and a web framework such as Micronaut or Spring
• Experience developing SaaS products, ideally in an Agile or cross-functional product environment
• Strong backend engineering fundamentals combined with interest in contributing outside the backend stack when product features require it
• Familiarity with AI-powered coding assistants (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar), or strong willingness to adopt them
• Product-minded approach with ability to understand user problems, evaluate solutions, and take ownership through delivery
• Strong curiosity, adaptability, communication skills, and engineering judgment
• Ability to collaborate effectively across product, design, and engineering disciplines
• Experience working directly from design mockups or prototypes (plus)
• Knowledge of instrumentation and experimentation tools such as A/B testing, Grafana, or Mixpanel (plus)
• Experience with Kubernetes and Helm (plus)
• Practical experience with PostgreSQL (plus)
• Familiarity with messaging technologies such as RabbitMQ or Apache Kafka (plus)
