Senior Backend Engineer (f/m/d)

About This Role

We are representing a well-funded technology company in the DACH region that has built a leading platform for institutional real estate organizations. Our client is now expanding their engineering team as they scale their AI-powered analytics capabilities. This is a hands-on senior backend engineering position where you'll own core systems from schema design through to production.

As Senior Backend Engineer, you'll be responsible for the systems behind the platform: the GraphQL API, relational data models, background processing pipelines that transform documents and spreadsheets into structured data, and the permissions model that serves clients ranging from individual property owners to large institutional portfolios.

You'll work closely with product, design, and engineering colleagues to build what matters. You'll take genuine ownership of production systems—when something is slow, you'll investigate whether the answer lies in a poor query, application code, or the infrastructure beneath it.

A significant part of this role involves making AI reliable in production. Document extraction, long-running analysis jobs, and agentic features are central to the product direction, and we need engineers who can make these workflows testable and dependable, not just impressive in demos.

Responsibilities

• Build features across the Hasura GraphQL API, NestJS, and PostgreSQL—from schema design through to resolver implementation
• Model complex real estate and ESG domains in relational schemas across multiple PostgreSQL databases (including geospatial)
• Own background processing: Excel imports, document extraction, and long-running analysis jobs with proper queue management, retries, and multi-step workflow orchestration
• Develop and maintain the authorization model for a multi-tenant product serving clients from individual owners to large organizations with access at organization, portfolio, and building levels
• Integrate LLMs into backend workflows—particularly for document and data extraction—and make them reliable and testable
• Debug production systems using observability tools to identify performance issues in application code, CI/build pipelines, or infrastructure
• Identify and simplify overgrown or unnecessarily complex parts of the codebase proactively

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Strong PostgreSQL skills: comfortable with schema design, reading query plans, and knowing when the ORM isn't telling the truth (geospatial experience is a bonus)
• Fluency in typed backend TypeScript; daily work involves NestJS and GraphQL, but comparable stack experience is acceptable
• Real queue-based processing experience: designing workers, handling retries and partial failures, orchestrating multi-stage workflows
• Authorization design experience for multi-tenant products
• Preference for integration tests against real databases over heavily mocked unit tests
• Production debugging skills using dashboards and traces; comfortable investigating infrastructure issues
• Clear communication with engineers, product teams, and customers when needed
• German at C1 level or better and fluent English (client base includes German banks and asset managers)

Bonus:

• AWS experience (S3, SES, ECS, RDS) and infrastructure-as-code
• LLMs in production, especially document or data extraction
• Data pipeline experience with staged, reproducible processing and dataset versioning
• Mentoring or engineering leadership experience or interest in growing into this
• Debugging tooling and build problems beyond application code
