Senior Backend Engineer – Core Engine / Decision Intelligence (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology company that builds decision intelligence software for complex operational workflows. As their recruiting partner, we're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the core engineering team working on sophisticated reasoning and planning systems.

In this role, you'll architect and build fundamental engine components that power structured knowledge representation, logical inference, and AI-driven decision support. Working closely with the CTO and engineering team, you'll translate algorithmic concepts into production-grade software, designing APIs and data structures that form the backbone of the platform.

This is a remote position based in Germany, offering the opportunity to shape core technology from an early stage.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend components for dependency modeling, scenario evaluation, and reasoning workflows
• Build clean APIs, data structures, and interfaces that enable seamless integration across engine components
• Transform prototypes and algorithmic concepts into maintainable, scalable production code
• Make informed build-versus-integrate decisions when evaluating existing tools and libraries
• Ensure component quality through automated testing, benchmarking, debugging, and performance profiling
• Develop diagnostic tools and traceability structures to make results reproducible across model versions and assumptions
• Collaborate with product teams to translate customer use cases into technical acceptance criteria
• Contribute to engineering standards through code reviews, documentation, and CI/CD workflow improvements

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Physics, or equivalent technical qualification
• Strong programming skills in at least one backend language (Python, Java, C++, Go, or Rust)
• Proven experience working with existing codebases at scale
• Solid foundation in algorithms, data structures, software design, and automated testing
• Experience designing APIs and working with data storage/processing systems with attention to performance and reliability
• Ability to decompose complex, ambiguous problems independently and evaluate alternative approaches
• Excellent German and English communication skills, both written and verbal
• Comfort with fast, iterative development cycles in collaborative team environments

Bonus qualifications (not required):

• Experience with graph-based systems or knowledge representation
• Background in planning, scheduling, or optimization algorithms
• Familiarity with rule engines or constraint solvers
• Integration of ML/LLM components into production systems
• Track record of transitioning research prototypes into production environments
