(Senior) Backend Engineer – Banking (f/m/x)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech client in Germany that is building critical banking infrastructure for the European investment landscape. As part of our recruitment process, we're seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their Banking domain team.

In this role, you will design and own reliable, scalable backend services that handle settlements, payments, and ledger accuracy. You'll work across the full stack of financial operations—ensuring cash flows are executed correctly, reconciliation data reflects reality, and partner-visible systems maintain the highest standards of trust and compliance.

You'll take end-to-end ownership within a cross-functional team, working with technologies including Python, FastAPI, AWS, and PostgreSQL. This is a hybrid position based in Germany, with regular in-person collaboration in Berlin.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate backend services across settlements, payments, and ledger systems
• Take ownership of architectural decisions that impact core platform systems
• Ensure operational compliance with regulatory and contractual SLAs
• Build and maintain reliable REST APIs with high scalability standards
• Guide other engineers through code reviews and mentorship
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve customer problems
• Monitor and respond to partner-visible incidents affecting trust and custody
• Advocate for engineering best practices while scaling existing systems

What We're Looking For

• Strong experience writing maintainable, well-tested code in modern languages such as Python, Go, Java, Ruby, JavaScript, or TypeScript
• Proven track record designing and implementing scalable architectures and reliable REST APIs
• Solid experience with cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and associated architectural patterns
• Good understanding of relational databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL
• Experience building and operating reliable backend systems as part of cross-functional teams
• Ability to take ownership of problems and drive solutions independently
• Strong team collaboration skills with a mentorship mindset
• Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt quickly
• Experience working in startup or lean organizational environments is a plus
• Prior fintech or financial services experience is beneficial but not required
