Lila Sciences invites applications for a full-time Research Product Manager, Post Training based in Cambridge, MA USA or San Francisco, CA USA to guide the evolution of foundational model capabilities that transform research advances into meaningful scientific results.
The Opportunity
In the Research Product Manager, Post Training role at Lila Sciences you will establish the forward-looking plan for our primary foundational models by identifying the precise abilities and performance levels each release should deliver. You will gather and combine signals from scientific domain groups, product teams, commercial possibilities, and the wider competitive model environment into a ranked set of targets. Operating where research aspirations meet practical application, this work ensures every model version focuses on the most valuable capabilities and supports confident progression from experimentation into operational status.
Core Duties
- Direct the capability roadmap for our core foundational model releases by defining and ranking the specific abilities each version should address, supported by clear and justifiable reasoning.
- Convert insights from domain science teams, product counterparts, and commercial partners into explicit, measurable model specifications that research staff can implement.
- Carry out continuous evaluation of competing and leading models in both general and scientific categories, converting benchmark findings and identified shortfalls into roadmap choices.
- Create the assessment standards and achievement indicators that verify when a requested capability has been realized.
- Determine the promotion requirements that models must satisfy before entering production use.
- Work closely with research leads and model-training specialists to order capability tasks in a practical sequence given limits on compute resources, data, and schedules.
- Sustain open records of capability goals, evaluation outcomes, and release determinations so the basis for each model decision remains clear and revisit-able.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or an allied area, or equivalent practical experience building AI and machine learning systems.
- Established product management background with AI or ML products, ideally including ownership of a model, platform, or capability roadmap in a scientific setting.
- Deep familiarity with the training, assessment, and release practices of foundational or large models, paired with the capacity to collaborate authoritatively with researchers and make solid prioritization decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to turn stakeholder requirements and competitive observations into well-defined, measurable specifications.
- Experience setting release standards and quality thresholds for production systems or models.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills along with a history of guiding decisions across functions.
- Additional value for product management work with foundation models, frontier models, or AI platforms; prior service in an AI-centered research organization or within life sciences or materials science; knowledge of model evaluation methods, benchmarking approaches, and evaluation infrastructure; and readiness to function effectively in fast-paced, uncertain early-stage research contexts.
