Research Optical Engineer – Butte Lab – Department of Neurosurgery

CEDARS-SINAI is hiring a Research Optical Engineer to join the Butte Lab within our Department of Neurosurgery in Los Angeles. This full-time position offers the opportunity to design, develop, and validate advanced optical imaging systems that directly support cutting-edge neurosurgical research.

Position Summary

The Research Optical Engineer will play a critical role in designing and implementing optical technologies for neurosurgical applications. You'll work at the intersection of physics, engineering, and medicine, collaborating with neurosurgeons and research scientists to transform optical innovations into practical tools that advance our understanding and treatment of neurological conditions. This position combines hands-on engineering work with intellectual rigor and contributes to a mission-driven research environment.

Your Responsibilities

• Design and develop optical imaging systems and components for neurosurgical research applications
• Conduct optical testing, characterization, and validation of research prototypes
• Troubleshoot and optimize optical systems for performance, precision, and reliability
• Collaborate with neurosurgical teams to translate clinical needs into engineering specifications
• Maintain detailed technical documentation and testing protocols
• Support integration of optical systems with surgical platforms and research workflows
• Stay current with advances in optical engineering and neurosurgical imaging technology

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in optical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, or related field
• Demonstrated expertise in optical system design and analysis
• Proficiency with optical design software and measurement instruments
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills applied to complex technical challenges
• Experience with laboratory work, prototyping, and hands-on testing
• Ability to document work clearly and communicate findings to multidisciplinary teams
• Attention to detail and commitment to precision in research and engineering
• Familiarity with biomedical devices or research environments is valued
