Principal Analytics Engineer (f/m/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential e-commerce trust and verification organization headquartered in Germany. Our client is building a modern data lakehouse architecture to deliver standardized data products across analytics, product APIs, and AI use cases. They need a Principal Analytics Engineer to define technical standards, architect scalable solutions, and mentor cross-functional teams.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role based in Berlin (remote) or hybrid in Cologne. You'll set the architectural direction for a shared lakehouse platform, build exemplary data products that others follow, and elevate the craft of analytics engineering across multiple domain teams.

Responsibilities

• Define and evolve lakehouse architecture using S3, Apache Iceberg, Athena, and dbt—covering table design, partitioning, schema evolution, and multi-team isolation
• Establish modeling conventions, semantic layers, data quality frameworks, and CI/CD standards that enable reliable data products for human and AI consumers
• Build reference data products within the Product domain that demonstrate best practices and set patterns for other teams
• Design metadata and semantic structures that enable AI agents to query metrics accurately; pioneer AI-assisted modeling, testing, and documentation workflows
• Evaluate emerging lakehouse and analytics engineering tools; drive adoption of proven approaches
• Mentor analysts and engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and constructive challenge of the status quo

What We're Looking For

• Deep, hands-on lakehouse experience—you have designed and built architectures with open table formats (Apache Iceberg or equivalent), object storage, serverless query engines, and dbt
• Excellent analytics engineering craft: data product modeling, dimensional modeling, testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and strong instincts for query performance and cost optimization
• Demonstrated technical leadership beyond a single team—you've set standards or architecture that other teams adopted and can influence without formal authority
• Product mindset: you treat data as a product with defined consumers and SLAs, including APIs and AI agents
• Concrete hands-on AI experience in your own work, with genuine curiosity and responsible experimentation
• Comfort with autonomy and ambiguity—you set direction, make technical decisions, and bring people along
• Fluency in English; German is a plus
