Mechanical Engineer III – Battery Systems Engineering

Proper-voltage is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III specializing in Battery Systems Engineering for our Carlsbad, CA office. This is a full-time position for an experienced engineer ready to lead battery system design, development, and optimization initiatives.

The Opportunity

As Mechanical Engineer III – Battery Systems Engineering, you'll own critical mechanical design and integration responsibilities across battery architecture and thermal management. This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with cross-functional leadership, allowing you to influence product performance, manufacturing feasibility, and cost optimization. You'll work with a team committed to advancing battery technology and delivering reliable, scalable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, analyze, and validate mechanical components and assemblies for battery systems, including cell packaging, housings, and structural supports
• Develop thermal management strategies and cooling system designs to optimize battery performance and longevity
• Conduct finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and other simulations to validate designs under operating conditions
• Collaborate with electrical, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to ensure design feasibility, producibility, and cost-effectiveness
• Lead design reviews, prototype testing, and failure analysis to drive continuous improvement
• Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and quality requirements

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline; Master's degree preferred
• 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience, with at least 3 years focused on battery systems, energy storage, or automotive thermal systems
• Proficiency in CAD software (SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, or equivalent) and simulation tools (ANSYS, COMSOL, or similar)
• Strong understanding of battery chemistry, cell architectures, thermal management, and safety considerations
• Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM), materials selection, and cost analysis
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project management skills
• Familiarity with industry standards (IEC 62619, UL 2054, or equivalent) is a plus
