Mechanic-1st Shift

Waste Connections is hiring a full-time Mechanic for 1st Shift operations at our North Elizabeth facility in Union County. We're seeking a skilled, safety-conscious technician who takes pride in quality work and understands how critical fleet maintenance is to our drivers and the communities we serve.

About the Role

As a Mechanic on our 1st Shift team, you'll be essential to keeping our commercial fleet in top condition. Working Monday through Friday with alternating Saturday shifts, you'll perform preventive maintenance, diagnose mechanical issues, and execute repairs on our waste collection and transportation vehicles. Your work directly enables our drivers to provide reliable service every day.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine maintenance and comprehensive inspections on commercial waste vehicles
• Diagnose engine, hydraulic, brake, and suspension system issues using proper testing equipment
• Perform repairs and replacements on mechanical and electrical systems
• Document all service records, maintenance schedules, and parts usage accurately
• Maintain a clean, organized work area and adhere to all safety and OSHA standards
• Coordinate with operations staff and drivers regarding vehicle status and maintenance priorities

Skills & Qualifications

• Valid driver's license and ability to operate commercial vehicles for testing purposes
• Hands-on experience as a heavy-duty truck or fleet mechanic
• Solid knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and commercial brake systems
• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic scanning equipment
• Understanding of preventive maintenance best practices and repair procedures
• Strong safety awareness and commitment to precision in every task
