Waste Connections is hiring a Mechanic for its Baxter Estates, Nassau County facility. This full‑time position supports the maintenance team by keeping the company’s waste‑collection fleet and equipment operating safely and efficiently.
About the Role
The Mechanic performs preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of heavy‑duty vehicles, ensuring they meet operational and safety standards. The schedule runs Monday through Friday with alternating Saturdays as needed, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and the hourly wage ranges from $30 to $40 based on experience.
What You'll Do
- Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on trucks, loaders, and related equipment
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and technical manuals
- Repair or replace components such as engines, transmissions, brakes, and suspension systems
- Perform welding, fabrication, and minor bodywork when required
- Maintain accurate service records and parts inventory in accordance with company procedures
- Ensure all work complies with OSHA regulations and internal safety policies
- Assist with seasonal equipment preparation and respond to breakdowns as needed
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as a diesel or heavy‑duty mechanic, preferably in a waste‑management or transportation setting
- ASE certification or equivalent technical training is a plus
- Strong understanding of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems found on commercial vehicles
- Ability to read schematics, service bulletins, and wiring diagrams
- Valid driver’s license with a clean record; CDL advantageous but not mandatory
- Commitment to workplace safety and a proactive attitude toward problem‑solving
- Flexibility to work occasional Saturdays and adapt to shifting priorities
