Head of Electrical Engineering, AI Factory Development

Responsibilities

We are representing a confidential AI infrastructure organization seeking a Head of Electrical Engineering for their AI Factory Development team in Sydney, Australia. In this principal-level management role, you will lead the electrical engineering discipline across multiple sites where our client is building and scaling advanced compute facilities.

You will own electrical engineering execution across a global portfolio, serving as the single point of accountability for electrical design implementation from tender through energisation. Your responsibilities include:

• Leading distributed teams of site-based electrical engineers across multiple geographies including Indonesia and Australia
• Ensuring consistent, high-quality implementation of reference electrical designs across all construction sites
• Acting as the engineering authority for MV/LV distribution, UPS systems, standby generation, protection and coordination, earthing and bonding, and power quality
• Managing design governance, deviation control, factory and site acceptance testing, and commissioning readiness
• Serving as the technical escalation point for electrical issues in the field and when reference designs require evolution
• Operating change-control and design-review processes to maintain alignment with technical standards
• Partnering with mechanical, thermal, controls, and networking teams to ensure integrated systems delivery
• Working closely with construction, commissioning, and operations teams through handover
• Feeding operational learnings, site constraints, and commissioning findings back to reference design owners
• Setting operating rhythms across time zones and establishing consistent engineering practice and quality standards

What We're Looking For

Our ideal candidate is an accomplished electrical engineer with deep expertise in mission-critical, high-density digital infrastructure. You bring proven experience in:

• Medium- and low-voltage distribution systems for high-density compute environments
• UPS systems, standby and prime-power generation, static and rotary switching
• Protection and relay coordination, arc-flash analysis, and safety-in-design
• Earthing and bonding for sensitive electronic loads
• Electrical systems for dense GPU compute halls and liquid-cooled infrastructure
• Power system modelling: load flow, short-circuit, motor starting, and transient stability analysis

Required qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (power systems preferred)
• 12+ years of progressive experience in hyperscale data centres, mission-critical facilities, or comparable high-availability infrastructure
• Proven track record leading design governance and quality assurance across portfolio-level, multi-site programmes
• Experience leading distributed, site-based engineering teams across multiple countries
• Deep expertise across the delivery lifecycle: tender design reviews, consultant and contractor governance, FAT, IST, commissioning (level 1-5), and handover to operations
• Experience authoring or contributing to Basis of Design documents, engineering templates, and global minimum standards
• Strong systems thinking and ability to challenge design and vendor assumptions constructively
• Comfort engaging utilities, regulators, and major equipment vendors
• Experience delivering into APAC markets, particularly Indonesia and Australia, under diverse regulatory and utility conditions
• Commercial awareness and ability to operate effectively across cultures and time zones
• Exceptional communication skills for technical reviews, site teams, and executive audiences

This role requires regular travel across the client's facility portfolio.
