Founding Engineer – atmo (Berlin-based / Hybrid)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a well-funded Berlin-based climate tech startup at the intersection of agricultural transition and green finance. Our client has built an AI-first platform that is currently scaling from initial rollout to broader market adoption. They are seeking a Founding Engineer to join their founding team and build the AI backbone of their product.

This is a hybrid role based in Berlin, offering the opportunity to work directly with the founding team on real climate impact technology that serves farmers and financial institutions across Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK.

Responsibilities

• Build, run, and continuously improve LLM pipelines that classify farm records, soil samples, and financial statements, extract structured data, and generate bank-ready reports
• Own the platform end-to-end: Python/FastAPI backend, Next.js web applications, and AWS infrastructure
• Partner closely with the Chief Science Officer to define the interface between scientific models and product features, turning research into production-ready capabilities
• Ensure AI outputs are trustworthy through evaluations, guardrails, and clear data provenance, so every output can be traced back to its source
• Ship fast and iterate constantly using modern AI tooling to deliver high-leverage impact with a lean team

What We're Looking For

• Hands-on builder who prefers working in the codebase over meetings
• Strong Python backend expertise (FastAPI or similar, SQL, background jobs)
• Comfortable across the stack with TypeScript/Next.js and owning AWS infrastructure
• Practical experience running LLM-based systems in production, including structured extraction, evaluation, cost and latency management, and graceful failure handling
• Comfortable working directly with scientific and domain experts to turn models into shipped features
• Fast-paced, get-it-done mindset that thrives in ambiguity and on lean teams
• Takes ownership of technical decisions, not just implementation tasks
• Genuine interest in climate, sustainable agriculture, and green finance
• Bonus: Experience in fintech, agritech, or applied climate/agricultural science; German language skills are helpful as much of the farm data is in German
