About the Role
Working under the guidance of the Athletic Director, the Head Coach for Boys Varsity Cross Country is responsible for building and sustaining a competitive, athlete-centered program at Odessa High School. This is an opportunity to shape young distance runners into disciplined, high-performing student-athletes while fostering a culture of teamwork, academic accountability, and personal growth.
What You'll Do
- Design, plan, and lead all aspects of the varsity cross country program, including practices, conditioning, and race-day preparation
- Develop individualized and team training plans that advance athletic performance and sport-specific fitness
- Recruit, evaluate, and mentor student-athletes throughout the season
- Monitor academic progress and ensure athletes meet eligibility requirements
- Communicate regularly with the Athletic Director, school administration, parents, and athletes
- Enforce school district policies, safety standards, and DIAA (Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association) rules
- Manage equipment, coordinate transportation logistics, and oversee meet scheduling
- Model sportsmanship and reinforce the values of integrity and respect at all competitions
What We're Looking For
- Demonstrated coaching experience in cross country, distance running, or a closely related track and field discipline
- Strong knowledge of training methodology, periodization, and injury prevention for distance runners
- Ability to motivate and connect with high school athletes of varying skill levels
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Commitment to the academic and athletic development of student-athletes
- Ability to pass required background checks and meet all Appoquinimink School District employment standards
- Valid CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the season
