Engineering Lead – Core Group

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential sports betting and gaming organization in the United Kingdom that is seeking an Engineering Lead for their Core Group. This is a unique hybrid role combining hands-on technical leadership with formal people management responsibilities.

Our client's Core Group owns critical customer lifecycle infrastructure including registration, identity verification, payments, withdrawals, and account management. You'll be building customer-facing products, backend services, and operational tooling across KYC, fraud prevention, safer gambling, compliance, and market expansion initiatives.

This position is not a conventional Engineering Manager role nor a purely technical lead position. You'll write production code, create pull requests, and ship features while setting technical direction and developing a team of three to six engineers. Your impact will be measured both by what you build and by the quality of your team's technical decisions, delivery, and growth.

Responsibilities

• Set pragmatic technical direction and lead system design across clients, APIs, services, data, infrastructure, and integrations
• Write production code, create PRs, and release features alongside contributing technical designs, investigations, and reviews
• Collaborate with Product and Design to transform ambiguous opportunities into clear milestones and incremental deliverables
• Formally manage three to six engineers through one-to-ones, feedback, performance management, and development support
• Coach and develop engineers through design discussions, code reviews, pairing sessions, debugging, and production incident reviews
• Champion effective testing strategies, observability, safe release practices, and strong production feedback loops
• Make sensible technical trade-offs, maintain visibility of risks, and drive system improvements following production issues
• Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and shared engineering practices across the organization

What We're Looking For

• Significant backend engineering experience, including time operating at senior or lead level
• Deep backend expertise with a full-stack, systems-thinking mindset covering clients, APIs, services, data, infrastructure, and operations
• Strong Python skills, or proficiency in another modern backend language with willingness to learn Python
• Proven experience setting technical direction and designing, delivering, and operating reliable systems
• Experience formally managing engineers, or strong evidence of readiness to own one-to-ones, feedback, performance management, and development for a team of three to six
• Ability to challenge assumptions constructively and help find simpler, more effective solutions
• Track record of breaking down ambiguous, complex work into simple, safe deliverables
• Solid database and production-engineering fundamentals, including AWS, CI/CD, and observability
• Clear, energetic communication style with ability to bring others into technical discussions and create team momentum
