Books List/Feature Writer

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential digital media organization seeking a Books List/Feature Writer for a freelance, remote position based in the United States. This role focuses on creating recommendation lists and feature content for book readers—not traditional book reviews. Approximately 80% of the work involves ranking and recommendation lists, with the remainder covering book news and features.

Responsibilities

• Write list-format and feature articles following the client's house style after completing training and peer mentorship
• Cover current and upcoming book releases and breaking book news
• Stay informed about new releases across multiple genres
• Brainstorm, pitch, and develop original content ideas for book recommendations
• Maintain active communication with the editorial team
• Meet fast turnaround times while maintaining quality standards

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English Literature, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 2+ years of experience writing about books, OR experience writing on other topics in credible publications plus demonstrated book expertise through review platforms or social media
• Broad working knowledge of the book and publishing landscape as a generalist reader
• Ability to write broad recommendation lists rather than focusing on a single niche
• Active reading across science fiction/fantasy AND at least one other major genre (candidates who read only within a single genre such as romance, horror, or literary fiction are not a fit)
• Current awareness of new and upcoming book releases
• Strong, demonstrable comfort with the list format and ability to work quickly
• Quick learner with strong sense of urgency and drive
• Excellent English-language writing skills, free of grammatical and spelling errors
• Comfortable working in a fully remote environment

Preferred:

• Freelance writing experience with comparable entertainment, pop-culture, or books publications
• NetGalley account or familiarity with the platform
• Active Bookstagram or BookTok presence with significant following
• Participation in publisher influencer or advance-reader programs
• Experience with review/tracking platforms such as BookBub, StoryGraph, Goodreads, or Fable
