Role Overview

As a Chaplain specializing in inpatient palliative care, you will be an essential member of our interdisciplinary healthcare team. Working across Spectrumhealth's multiple care settings, you'll provide compassionate spiritual and emotional counseling to patients with serious illnesses and their families. This role bridges healthcare and faith communities, offering presence, listening, and spiritual resources tailored to each individual's beliefs and needs during end-of-life care and the palliative journey.

Your Responsibilities

  • Offer spiritual care, counseling, and emotional support to patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care
  • Support families and loved ones through the grieving process and major life transitions
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to address patient spiritual needs
  • Conduct religious or spiritual rituals, prayers, and observances as requested and appropriate
  • Document patient interactions and chaplaincy activities in accordance with healthcare records standards
  • Maintain cultural competency and respect for diverse faith traditions and belief systems
  • Provide crisis counseling and bereavement support resources to patients and families

Skills & Qualifications

  • Board certification or eligibility through the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or similar recognized credentialing body
  • Ordination, endorsement, or equivalent faith community recognition
  • Excellent interpersonal and active listening skills
  • Ability to communicate with compassion across diverse religious and cultural backgrounds
  • Understanding of palliative care principles and end-of-life care practices
  • Commitment to patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance
  • Physical ability to move throughout healthcare facilities and provide bedside care
