Software Engineer I, Canada and Emerging Markets (Fullstack)

Toast is hiring a Software Engineer I (Fullstack) for the Canada and Emerging Markets team, based in Toronto, Canada. This full-time, hybrid role—requiring one day per week in-office—offers hands-on experience developing across the entire technology stack, from mobile point-of-sale applications to cloud-based backend systems, with mentorship and collaboration from experienced engineers.

About the Role

Toast builds technology that empowers restaurants and hospitality businesses to succeed in the digital marketplace. As a Software Engineer I on our Canada & Emerging Markets team, you'll develop software across the complete platform ecosystem that serves thousands of restaurants throughout North America. Based in Toronto with hybrid flexibility, you'll receive structured mentorship, work on real features from your first sprint, engage in code review processes, and progressively tackle more complex challenges. Your Responsibilities

• Develop features spanning the entire software stack: mobile point-of-sale applications (Kotlin), backend services (Kotlin/Java), and customer-facing web applications (React/TypeScript).
• Build and maintain RESTful backend services and understand their integration with Toast's broader platform.
• Create interfaces and features for internal tools and customer-facing web products using React and TypeScript.
• Write and maintain automated tests (unit and integration) to ensure code quality and system stability.
• Give and receive code review feedback, strengthening both the codebase and your own technical growth.
• Work alongside product, design, and quality engineering teams to deliver solutions addressing diverse regional markets.
• Complete onboarding codelabs covering backend and frontend systems to establish foundational knowledge.
• Learn Toast's infrastructure, deployment pipelines, continuous integration practices, and feature flag systems including LaunchDarkly.
• Maintain clear documentation in Jira and Confluence aligned with agile team processes.
• Adopt AI-assisted development tools to strengthen your coding efficiency and contribute to a culture of innovation.

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent hands-on professional experience.
• Solid grounding in at least one backend programming language such as Kotlin, Java, Python, or similar object-oriented language.
• Practical exposure to frontend web development technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or TypeScript; React experience is preferred.
• Working knowledge of RESTful application programming interfaces and how frontend and backend systems interact.
• Experience with relational databases (SQL) or NoSQL options (DynamoDB, MongoDB, or comparable technologies).
• Hands-on experience with version control systems (Git) and team-based development workflows.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and formulate insightful questions.
• Genuine motivation to learn continuously, accept constructive feedback, and evolve within a high-paced setting.
• Familiarity with agile methodologies, sprint planning, daily standups, and team retrospectives.

Advantageous experience includes Android development, modern frontend frameworks and tooling, cloud platforms (AWS), containerisation (Docker), CI/CD pipelines, event-driven architectures, open-source contributions, AI-enhanced coding tools, and familiarity with restaurant or payments technology.
