Robotics & Automation Project Engineer

Formic is seeking a Robotics & Automation Project Engineer to join our team in Syracuse, NY. As a rapidly scaling manufacturing automation company backed by prominent investors, Formic helps factories deploy robotic systems that boost productivity and safety. In this full-time role, you'll oversee the performance and reliability of deployed systems in live production environments, combining advanced troubleshooting with strategic optimization work.

Role Overview

Within our Fleet Operations team, you'll manage the uptime and effectiveness of Formic's growing fleet of installed robotic systems. Working directly in manufacturing facilities, you'll diagnose complex technical issues, strengthen system stability, and drive continuous improvement across diverse industrial settings. This position bridges reactive problem-solving with proactive engineering initiatives, directly influencing production reliability and customer outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify and resolve complex automation failures to minimize production downtime at customer sites
• Design and implement preventative and predictive maintenance plans that boost system reliability
• Direct system-level improvement projects, including hardware upgrades and software refinements
• Analyze production data and system trends to uncover performance bottlenecks across the fleet
• Offer remote technical support via service tickets, guiding troubleshooting and coordinating field escalations
• Execute preventative and corrective maintenance activities in the Syracuse region
• Work across Product, Engineering, and Deployment teams to standardize system configurations
• Document system configurations, maintenance schedules, and procedural changes
• Serve as technical escalation point for complex system issues
• Guide field technicians and engineers on system diagnostics and reliability practices
• Maintain compliance with safety regulations, quality standards, and industry requirements

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of direct experience in manufacturing automation or industrial robotics environments
• Demonstrated proficiency in PLC, robot, and industrial control system programming
• Strong foundational knowledge of robotic systems, motion controls, and automated manufacturing equipment
• Hands-on background troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and controls issues
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation
• Experience operating in production-critical manufacturing settings
• Structured problem-solving methodology and analytical troubleshooting skills
• Effective written and verbal communication abilities
• Self-directed work style with strong cross-functional collaboration skills
• Willingness to travel up to 50% annually based on operational needs
• Valid driver's license for regional field support
• Background in high-volume manufacturing, multi-facility standardization, or predictive maintenance tools valued
