Senior Software Engineer, Event Streaming Systems

About This Opportunity

We are representing a global technology company operating a high-scale, multi-sided marketplace platform. Our client is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Event Streaming Systems team in Berlin, Germany. This is a hybrid role focused on building and operating mission-critical event streaming infrastructure that powers real-time workflows across their global engineering organization.

As part of the Storage organization, you'll work on highly reliable, scalable event streaming platforms including Kafka and proprietary streaming abstractions that support Tier-0 production workloads used by engineering teams across multiple regions.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and operate large-scale event streaming infrastructure supporting critical production workloads
• Improve reliability, scalability, observability and automation of Kafka and related streaming platforms
• Debug complex distributed systems issues including performance bottlenecks, capacity constraints and production reliability challenges
• Build infrastructure automation and self-healing capabilities to reduce operational toil and improve platform resilience
• Contribute to incident response, operational readiness and continuous improvement for Tier-0 infrastructure
• Partner closely with Storage, SRE, Data Platform and Core Infrastructure teams across US and EU regions
• Help shape the long-term architecture and evolution of the event streaming platform

What We're Looking For

Required Skills and Experience:

• Strong hands-on experience building or operating distributed systems in production environments
• Experience with Kafka or similar event streaming systems, either as a platform engineer or heavy user
• Strong coding ability in Java, Go, Python or similar languages with focus on reliable, maintainable production systems
• Experience operating scalable production infrastructure including debugging, troubleshooting and improving reliability
• Strong understanding of infrastructure automation, observability, capacity management and operational excellence
• Good fundamentals in Linux, networking and JVM-based systems
• Strong collaboration and communication skills across platform, infrastructure and product engineering teams

Nice to Have:

• Experience contributing to Kafka or related open source distributed systems
• Experience with Redpanda, WarpStream, AutoMQ, Pulsar or similar streaming technologies
• Experience with JVM tuning, broker tuning, partition management or Cruise Control
• Experience with tiered storage, diskless streaming architectures or multi-region event streaming platforms
• Experience operating Tier-0 infrastructure at large scale
