Junior Linux Kernel Engineer – Ubuntu

About This Opportunity

Our talent team is representing a confidential open-source software organization seeking a Junior Linux Kernel Engineer to join their globally distributed kernel development team. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or early-career professionals who want to work on production Linux kernels used across cloud, silicon, and embedded platforms worldwide.

You'll collaborate with experienced engineers to build, maintain, and optimize kernel solutions for diverse hardware architectures—from embedded devices to large-scale cloud environments. This role offers genuine responsibility from day one, with mentorship to accelerate your growth in low-level systems programming.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with a distributed team across multiple timezones on kernel development initiatives
• Work with external silicon, cloud, and hardware partners on bleeding-edge platform enablement
• Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers, community members, and internal testing
• Take ownership of delivery for specific kernel flavors and platform targets
• Submit, review, and apply kernel patches in coordination with upstream maintainers
• Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery, testing, and validation
• Support security updates, patching workflows, and exploit mitigation efforts
• Enable driver support for new PC platforms, embedded systems, and third-party integrations

What We're Looking For

Required:

• Recent university graduate or early-career professional with a background in software engineering
• Strong programming skills in C and/or Rust
• Understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals
• Familiarity with version control practices, ideally git
• Effective written and verbal communication in English
• Self-motivated and well-organized, able to thrive in a remote work environment
• Professional communication style with colleagues, partners, and open-source communities
• Ability to travel internationally twice per year for team events (up to two weeks each)

Nice to Have:

• Interest or experience in Rust programming
• Python and Bash scripting capability
• Prior experience with Debian or Ubuntu packaging
• Demonstrated kernel patching and debugging experience
• Strong understanding of device drivers, BSPs, or low-level system engineering
