Backend Engineer

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential edtech organization based in Bielefeld that is building transformative AI-powered solutions for the education sector. Our client serves thousands of educators and hundreds of thousands of learners across Europe, and they're scaling rapidly with strong investor backing.

As a Backend Engineer, you'll take ownership of backend architecture, API design, and system reliability. You'll build features end-to-end—from understanding user problems through to production deployment—and work directly with LLM-based systems and agentic components. When needed, you'll extend your work into the frontend to maintain full product context.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement API-first services, data models, and system boundaries that ensure reliability, maintainability, and scalability
• Ship features end-to-end, from user problem definition through backend and data modeling to UI implementation and production deployment
• Build product features using LLM APIs and agentic components, implementing tool calling, evaluation frameworks, error handling, and monitoring for reliable operation
• Maintain production quality through testing, CI/CD, and observability practices, taking full ownership of your systems
• Work closely with educators to understand their needs, collaborating with Product and Design to make informed technical decisions rather than waiting for tickets

What We're Looking For

• At least three years of experience developing and operating modern web applications, ideally with TypeScript, Node.js, and Next.js
• Proven experience designing and implementing APIs, data models, and backend services
• Strong technical foundation in API design, databases, and asynchronous processes; experience with CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and monitoring is helpful
• Full-stack capability with React and Next.js, able to take features through to the UI independently when needed
• Hands-on AI engineering experience building LLM-based features or agentic systems; understanding of tool calling, common model failure modes, and how to test and monitor such functionality in production
• Ownership mindset and sound judgment when working with open requirements; ability to find simple solutions to complex problems
• Product thinking—genuine interest in how users work and ability to connect technical decisions with actual user needs
• Fluent German and very good English
