Senior Robotics Engineer (m/f/d) – Drone Port

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential aerospace technology organization that is developing advanced autonomous aerial infrastructure. They are seeking a Senior Robotics Engineer to join their team in Gilching, Bayern, Germany, working on cutting-edge drone port automation systems.

This role focuses on building the robotics intelligence that enables fully autonomous launch, landing, charging, and mission readiness capabilities. You'll work on perception algorithms, control systems, and embedded software that allow ground infrastructure and aircraft to interact seamlessly in real-world environments.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement robotic capabilities for fully autonomous drone port operations
• Develop perception algorithms for precision landing, docking, localization, and environmental awareness
• Design and optimize closed-loop control algorithms for ground-based robotic systems and UAV interactions
• Develop embedded software for sensors, actuators, and hardware interfaces
• Integrate cameras, ranging sensors, IMUs, encoders, and additional perception sensors into the system architecture
• Develop robust sensor fusion algorithms for reliable operation under varying environmental conditions
• Design and validate communication interfaces between ground systems, aircraft, and cloud infrastructure
• Develop software for autonomous system monitoring, diagnostics, and fault detection
• Support hardware bring-up, integration, and system validation in laboratory and field environments
• Analyze test results, debug complex system behavior, and continuously improve system robustness
• Collaborate with Mechanical, Electrical, and Systems Engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle
• Support flight and field testing of autonomous capabilities
• Contribute to software architecture, coding standards, and engineering best practices
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the technical growth of the robotics team

What We're Looking For

• Master's degree or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related discipline
• Several years of professional experience developing robotic or autonomous systems
• Strong programming skills in modern C++ and Python
• Experience developing embedded software in C/C++
• Strong understanding of robotics fundamentals: perception, state estimation, sensor fusion, motion planning, and feedback control
• Experience with robotic middleware such as ROS or ROS2
• Experience integrating cameras, IMUs, LiDAR, UWB, radar, or similar sensors
• Familiarity with computer vision libraries such as OpenCV
• Experience implementing real-time control systems
• Experience with machine learning for robotic perception
• Experience with Linux-based embedded systems
• Familiarity with Git and modern CI/CD development workflows
• Strong systems thinking and ability to work across software, electronics, and mechanics
• Experience with autonomous vehicles, UAVs, industrial robotics, mobile robots, or automated machinery highly desirable
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Fluent English required
