Senior Backend Engineer (f/m/d)

Responsibilities

We are representing a well-funded PropTech company in the DACH region that is building an AI-powered intelligence platform for real estate ESG and value management. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own the systems that power their platform and work directly on production infrastructure that processes customer data at scale.

Your core responsibilities include:

• Building features across the GraphQL API, NestJS backend, and PostgreSQL databases, from schema design through to resolver implementation
• Modeling complex domain logic in relational schemas across multiple PostgreSQL databases, including geospatial data structures
• Owning background processing systems: Excel imports, document extraction, long-running analysis jobs, and multi-step workflows with proper retry and recovery logic
• Developing and maintaining the permission model for a multi-tenant product serving both individual property owners and large enterprises with hierarchical access controls
• Integrating LLMs into backend workflows—particularly for document and data extraction—and making them reliable, verifiable, and testable in production
• Debugging production issues using observability tools, navigating traces and dashboards to identify performance bottlenecks in application code, queries, or infrastructure
• Identifying and refactoring overgrown or overly complex parts of the codebase to pay down technical debt

The tech stack includes TypeScript with NestJS, Hasura/GraphQL, PostgreSQL (including PostGIS), queue-based job processing, AWS services (ECS, S3, SES, Textract), and Claude for AI workflows.

What We're Looking For

Required skills and experience:

• Strong PostgreSQL expertise: natural fluency with schema design, ability to read query plans, and understanding of when ORMs fail you (geospatial experience is a bonus)
• Fluency in typed backend TypeScript; experience with NestJS and GraphQL is ideal, but comparable stack experience is acceptable if you learn quickly
• Proven experience building queue-based processing systems: designing workers, handling retries and partial failures, orchestrating multi-step workflows
• Experience designing or working with authorization models for multi-tenant products
• Pragmatic testing philosophy: you prefer integration tests that hit real database schemas over heavily-mocked unit tests
• Production debugging skills: ability to navigate dashboards and distributed traces to diagnose performance issues across the stack
• Clear communication skills with engineers, product teams, and when necessary, directly with customers
• German language proficiency at C1 level or better, plus fluent English (you will interact with German-speaking customers)

Bonus qualifications:

• AWS experience (S3, SES, ECS, RDS) and infrastructure-as-code
• Production LLM experience, especially document or data extraction with reliability focus
• Data pipeline work: staged processing, reproducible workflows, dataset versioning
• Mentoring or technical leadership experience, or desire to grow into these responsibilities
• Debugging tooling and build systems, not just application code

This is an office-first role in Munich's Werksviertel area, with an expectation of 4 days per week on-site. The team is approximately 40 people, well-funded, and early enough that significant systems still need to be built. If you prefer fully defined processes over ownership and impact, this role is not the right fit.

Pay

Compensation details will be discussed during the screening process and are competitive for the Munich market, including base salary, performance bonus, and equity participation.
