Senior Java Fullstack Developer (m/w/d)

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential public sector organization in Germany that is driving digital transformation for government services. Our client is seeking a Senior Java Fullstack Developer to join their team working on a large-scale tax administration project. This role focuses on developing and maintaining systems that coordinate business processes across multiple specialized applications.

This is a remote-first position based in Kaarst, Nordrhein-Westfalen, with occasional on-site visits (approximately once per month).

Responsibilities

• Design, model, and implement business processes using BPMN and Camunda workflow engine, from requirements gathering through technical delivery
• Develop and enhance performant backend components using Java (17/21) and Spring Boot to support complex, cross-system business processes
• Design and implement interfaces (REST, SOAP, Messaging) and coordinate with adjacent systems and teams
• Create technical solution designs for cross-system process flows and integrate them into existing architectures
• Participate in transformation and processing of large data volumes within distributed system landscapes
• Coordinate with project stakeholders and participate in exchange formats, primarily remote with occasional in-person meetings
• Create, execute, and document developer and integration tests to ensure software quality
• Maintain, support, and continuously optimize existing software components in production
• Prepare technical documentation including interface descriptions, installation guides, and operational handbooks

What We're Looking For

• Minimum 7 years of hands-on experience developing backend applications with Java, plus strong knowledge of modern frameworks like Spring and Spring Boot
• Extensive experience developing distributed systems and microservice architectures, including confident use of interface technologies (REST, SOAP, Messaging)
• Practical experience with BPMN and workflow engines (especially Camunda) and a solid understanding of business process modeling
• Strong knowledge of databases (e.g., Oracle, PostgreSQL) and ORM frameworks such as Hibernate/JPA
• Experience working with Linux systems and basic shell scripting skills
• Confident use of common development and collaboration tools (e.g., Git, Jenkins, Gradle, Jira, Confluence)
• Structured, solution-oriented working style and ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly
• Experience in the public sector or with large, distributed IT system landscapes is advantageous
• Excellent German language skills, both written and spoken (C1 level required)
