Lead Employment Counsel

About This Opportunity

We are representing a fast-growing, global enterprise software organization in their search for a Lead Employment Counsel. This is a fully remote role supporting a distributed workforce across multiple jurisdictions worldwide.

Our client is building the first in-house employment legal function to serve as a trusted partner to their People team. You will be the go-to attorney for day-to-day employment matters, reducing reliance on outside counsel while maintaining deep expertise across complex, multi-jurisdictional employment law.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the first line of legal support for employment questions across the organization, resolving most matters directly without external counsel escalation
• Partner closely with People Business Partners on employee relations, performance management, terminations, leaves, and accommodations
• Manage complex and sensitive employee relations cases independently
• Own and optimize relationships with global employer-of-record platforms and other HR legal vendors, including contract terms, service levels, and performance monitoring
• Manage outside counsel relationships strategically: evaluate scope, control spend, and ensure appropriate engagement
• Ensure employment law compliance across all operating jurisdictions, with particular depth in the DACH region (works councils, termination protections, co-determination)
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Legal and Finance teams on projects involving employment compliance and risk
• Identify and implement AI-enabled tools to improve efficiency and responsiveness of legal support
• Track and actively reduce external legal spend against established baselines

What We're Looking For

• J.D. or equivalent law degree with active bar admission in at least one jurisdiction
• 8+ years of employment law experience, including substantial in-house experience at a global, multi-jurisdiction company
• Deep, current expertise in DACH employment law (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), plus broad experience across other global jurisdictions
• Proven experience managing outside counsel and HR vendor relationships, including employer-of-record platforms
• Strong track record advising HR and People teams directly, translating legal risk into business-pragmatic guidance
• Excellent judgment and autonomy—comfortable making independent calls without unnecessary escalation
• Experience leveraging AI tools to enhance legal or compliance workflows
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with ability to build trust across People, Legal, and Finance functions
