Staff Backend Engineer – Grafana Second Horizon | UK | Remote

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential observability technology organization in their search for a Staff Backend Engineer to join an innovative skunkworks initiative. This fully remote role is open to candidates located in the UK, Spain, Sweden, Ireland, or Germany.

Our client is building an AI-native data intelligence system that enables agents and applications to access enterprise context reliably and at scale. You'll be joining a high-autonomy team working on early-stage production services, helping to design and ship the core backend architecture that powers context ingestion, storage, retrieval APIs, and agent-facing integrations.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and operate core backend services for context ingestion, indexing, retrieval orchestration, API access, source configuration, and system administration
• Build a scalable multi-tenant SaaS foundation including tenant isolation, usage tracking, quotas, audit logs, background jobs, and reliable service boundaries
• Develop APIs and service interfaces that enable AI agents, MCP tools, CLIs, and internal applications to retrieve relevant context, provenance, confidence signals, and warnings
• Partner with the team to balance fast experimentation with long-term reliability as the project transitions from prototype to production
• Instrument services with comprehensive observability including metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and dashboards
• Shape technical direction including architecture, service boundaries, storage choices, API contracts, deployment patterns, and engineering practices
• Take full ownership of solutions you develop, ensuring they are innovative, scalable, maintainable, and aligned with real user workflows
• Communicate effectively across a dynamic, collaborative, remote-first environment

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Solid experience building production-grade, user-facing software systems with strong engineering fundamentals
• Self-starter capable of tackling complex engineering problems with minimal supervision
• Practical experience with AI technologies and frameworks, focused on delivering real-world solutions
• Comfort with releasing prototypes, collecting feedback, and iterating pragmatically
• Proven track record of taking ownership and driving projects forward through ambiguity
• Ability to define scope where requirements are loosely defined
• Strong collaborative and communication skills with a solutions-oriented mindset
• Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering, and building GenAI-powered applications
• Proven track record of delivering software actively used in production by real users
• Exposure to cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Experience using observability tools to understand and troubleshoot system behavior

Bonus qualifications:

• Experience building or working with agent frameworks or multi-agent workflows
• Background as a data analyst or work with data platforms such as Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, Snowflake, or DataBricks
• Experience building tools for data engineering
