Senior Backend Python Engineer (Gateway) – Relocation to Cyprus

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential fintech organization seeking a Senior Backend Python Engineer to join their gateway infrastructure team in Cyprus. This is a relocation opportunity for candidates currently based in Germany who are ready to relocate onsite with full support.

Our client operates high-volume payment processing systems where performance, scalability, and 99.9% uptime are non-negotiable. You'll work on dual-track engineering—maintaining existing production systems while architecting modern Python microservices to power next-generation payment flows.

Responsibilities

• Support and extend existing production payment gateway infrastructure while simultaneously designing high-performance Python microservices
• Architect and implement scalable distributed services to modernize legacy components under high-load production conditions
• Integrate complex third-party payment APIs with robust error handling, webhook management, and transaction flow optimization
• Lead code reviews and drive engineering best practices across the team
• Collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD pipeline improvements using GitLab and AWS services including Lambda and ECS
• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in distributed systems with a zero-downtime approach
• Mentor team members and take ownership of features from design through production deployment

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Python expertise (FastAPI and AsyncIO strongly preferred)
• Experience with Perl is a major advantage; genuine willingness to work with Perl production code is required
• Proven track record building and scaling microservices architectures and high-throughput systems
• Strong understanding of third-party API integration patterns including webhooks, callbacks, idempotency, and retry policies
• Hands-on experience with Docker containerization and AWS cloud infrastructure (Lambda, SQS/SNS, cloud networking)
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture and messaging systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
• Track record of owning features end-to-end and supporting other engineers
• Strong English communication skills for collaboration across distributed teams
• Advocate for clean, intentional code with deep understanding of engineering fundamentals
