Director, Software Engineering

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential B2B data and intelligence organization in their search for a Director of Software Engineering to lead foundational platform systems. This is a high-impact leadership role overseeing the core operational and analytical data stores that power the company's entire product suite.

You will lead senior engineers across two critical infrastructure areas: the operational data store (BigTable) responsible for scaling, performance, and change data capture systems; and the analytical data platform (BigQuery) handling data ingestion pipelines, onboarding workflows, and compliance-driven data deletion processes.

This role sits at the foundation of enterprise-scale data infrastructure—the reliability, scale, and integrity of these systems directly determine how quickly new data can be onboarded and how confidently it can be served to customers.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of senior engineers and tech leads across operational and analytical data platform systems
• Set the technical roadmap balancing scaling needs, data onboarding velocity, compliance obligations, and platform reliability
• Manage senior technical individual contributors directly—setting expectations, providing technical guidance, and developing career growth paths
• Own strategy and architecture for the operational data store (BigTable), driving scaling initiatives to handle data growth and increasing query/read-write demands
• Guide architecture decisions to improve performance, latency, and cost-efficiency at scale
• Own the strategy and architecture for change data capture (CDC) systems, ensuring data change events are captured and propagated reliably to downstream systems
• Lead the analytical data platform (BigQuery) strategy, including architecture and roadmap for data ingestion pipelines consuming CDC streams
• Drive initiatives to accelerate onboarding of new data sources, establishing standardized, repeatable ingestion patterns and tooling
• Own systems and processes handling customer data deletion requests, ensuring accurate, prompt execution in compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and related regulations
• Build observability and auditability into compliance workflows to provide clear evidence of regulatory adherence
• Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to define requirements for scaling, new data onboarding, and compliance work
• Establish operational best practices including monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and incident response to ensure high availability

What We're Looking For

Required:

• 8+ years of progressive experience in software/platform engineering or data engineering, with experience at a senior leadership level
• Direct experience managing senior technical talent—staff engineers, tech leads, or senior ICs—and maintaining a high technical bar
• Strong working knowledge of large-scale operational (e.g., BigTable) and analytical (e.g., BigQuery) data stores and distributed systems
• Experience scaling data infrastructure to handle high volume and throughput
• Experience with data ingestion pipeline architecture and change data capture (CDC) technologies such as Debezium, Kafka Connect, Kafka, or similar streaming/CDC tooling
• Experience with data privacy and compliance practices, including handling data deletion/right-to-be-forgotten requests under GDPR/CCPA
• Demonstrated ability to balance platform reliability and performance work against feature and onboarding velocity
• Proven cross-functional partnership skills with product and business stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills—able to present strategy, trade-offs, and progress to executive leadership

Preferred:

• Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) data infrastructure, including BigTable and BigQuery
• Familiarity with event streaming platforms (Kafka) and workflow/pipeline orchestration tools (Airflow or similar)
• Experience building self-service tooling that accelerates data onboarding for internal teams
